A short game to help understand archaeological digging.
The teacher will ask a few children to bring objects. She'll put the objects in a pile on her desk. She will knock the top of the pile over so that only the bottom part remains.
Then the teacher will explain: What we saw now is like an archaeological tell. The lower part that remains is like an ancient settlement. At some point, this settlement was destroyed and other people came and built on the remains. Eventually, the new settlement will also be destroyed- due to war or a drought, or an earthquake, etc.
After a few years, more people will come to live here, and so on.
Archaeologists form our times then come to this place, dig in the earth and search for remains from the different time periods. What may they find? (let the students answer)- cups, plates, tables, rings, jugs, arrows from war, etc.
We are now stepping into the shoes of an archaeologist.
At each of the stations you will have a task that will reveal an archaeological artifact that will help us advance in our understanding of the story of Chanukah.
